Biography

Crystal Soojeong Shin

Korean-born, Crystal is a botanical artist and scientific illustrator. Pursuing botanical art since her move to Seattle in 2013, she quickly blossomed as a botanical artist. She was the primary

illustrator of the 2nd edition of “Flora of the Pacific Northwest” for the University of Washington Herbarium, generating 882 botanical illustrations in 3 years. Crystal is an established teacher of botanical drawing with colored pencils. Crystal has taught numerous art classes for groups that include Gage Academy of Art, Washington Native Plant Society, Bellevue Botanic Gardens, Amazon, and Pacific NW Botanical Artists. She presented her techniques in the Online Technique Showcase for the 2022 ASBA conference.

Crystal is drawn to capturing the luminous colors and intricate details of natural subjects. As an instructor, she offers her intuitive understanding of color and her ability to broaden her student’s insight, while endeavoring to offer effective examples and solutions to their questions
